Why is Indian food so popular in the UK?: By the 19th century generations of Anglo-Indian nabobs returning to the UK after service in the British Raj brought their taste for highly spiced food back to the mother country. There is a long tradition of connections between the UK and the Indian sub-continent dating back at least to the formation of the East India Company in 1600AD. The earliest known “curry” recipe in an English cookbook was from 1747 The Art of Cookery made Plain and Easy by Hannah Glasse.

Some early restaurants in England served Anglo-Indian food, such as Veeraswamy in Regent Street, London, which opened in 1926, much later followed by their sister restaurant, Chutney Mary, which opened in 1990. E.P. Veeraswamy described his "Indian Cookery" in a book of that name in 1936. Many Indian restaurants, however, have reverted to the standard mix-and-match Indian dishes that are better known to the British public. Anglo-Indian cuisine was brought to England in the 1930s by the Veeraswamy restaurant, followed by a few others, but not by typical Indian restaurants.
