Rodney Densem Wines has been the leading North West Wine Merchant since 1972 specialising in bespoke gift supplies and corporate accounts. They also have an award-winning retail shop in Nantwich. They were nominated in Harpers as one of the UK's 'Most Inspiring' Independent Wine Merchants. The Rioja wines from the Urbina Winery si one of their best options.
This is the one of the most popular fine wines from Rioja. The Urbina family have four generations under their helm as vineyard owners in Rioja. They own around 75 hectares, all in the heart of the renowned sub-region of Rioja Alta which is known to produce grapes with fine structure and elegance.
The vineyards, mostly planted to tempranillo, are located around the village of Cuzcurrita which is at the north-west point of Rioja and therefore at the limit of vine production. Here the climate is influenced by the cooler Atlantic weather systems which results in a longer, more gradual ripening period and grapes that tend to show freshness, structure and intensity. The magic of this area is that it makes wines that are amongst some of the longest lived in Rioja.
Everything about this bodega centres around ageing. After picking, the grapes are fermented slowly in stainless steel, then aged extensively in a mixture of American (75%) and French (25%) barrels. After ageing in oak, the wines are held in tank which retains a lift and freshness in the wines (rarely seen for this traditional style of Rioja).
Pedro Benito Urbina makes a range of wines, mostly red, right across the quality spectrum from crianza to gran reserva. He releases his wines when they are ready to drink and fully mature. They represent the essence of classic Rioja: stylistically they rest their quality on finesse, complexity and savoury flavours, rather than power.
RD WINES HISTORY
Rodney Densem Wines was founded in 1972 by Rodney and Margie Densem, initially operating from a small warehouse (previously a cowshed!) just outside Nantwich. Rodney was a trainee manager at Marks and Spencer and at a young age managed the successful hotel and popular event venue at Alvaston Hall Hotel with his wife Margie. The wine company was originally an offshoot of the hotel and restaurant business and soon adopted the maxim "surely quality is of the utmost importance".
After a few years the family business expanded and Margie opened a retail shop located in Church lane, Nantwich. Going from strength to strength in 1981 the shop moved to a larger more prominent premises. The shop has won and continues to win many accolades including UK Independent Specialist of the Year. Located on Pillory Street in the centre of the beautiful market town of Nantwich the shop has become a destination hosting regular tastings, and having a fabulous selection of gifts, wines and spirits.
Rodney Densem Wines wholesale, shipping and agency business managed by Rodney moved to Regent House, Crewe in April 1998. Steve Leonard, previously at Classic Wine and Spirits and HM Customs and Excise joined the management team in May, 2000. He soon took over general operations and was pivotal in successfully initiating and acquiring several wine businesses including Telford Wines and Bretbury Wines. Nick Gent joined the team in September 2009 and was previously the Account Development Manager for G H Mumm& Perrier Jouet. He also worked at Matthew Clark. He became the Managing Director of the acquired Telford Wines, based in Telford for several years and now is an important contributor to the RD Wines team.
In December 2013 the founder and chairman Rodney Densem tragically died. Shortly afterwards his son Simon Densem, previously an equity analyst at UBS Investment bank joined the management team. In Autumn 2017 a 42,000sqft warehouse, office and distribution site was acquired at Halesfied 10, Telford. Situated on 4 acres within the industrial/office park the warehouse provides the newly renamed RD Wines the opportunity to expand well into the future. Rodney Densem Wines fully acquired Telford Wines and the companies were successfully restructured, merged and operate under the new name, RD Wines Ltd from Halesfield 10, Telford. The retail unit retains the Rodney Densem Wines name.
Steve Leonard heads the management team with Nick Gent; both are shareholders. The Densem family maintain a key interest in the day to day operations and strategy of the group. They retain their founders key core values "surely quality is of the utmost importance". Quality service and product remain key. The objective is to grow RD Wines organically, through strategic partnership and acquisition. Most importantly, they have the team to do it!

This event is probably the largest of its kind in the region and is open to all clients of Rodney Densem Wines. Over 500 guests can enjoy the annual wine tasting at the Crewe Hall. Some 250 prestigious wines, spirits and champagnes are available for tasting, many of which are new additions to the RDW portfolio of over 1200 products. Suppliers and growers are also on hand to present their products, answer questions and give advice, some of whom will travel from Europe and the Southern hemisphere. Master classes are also hold by wine experts.
The hall remained the seat of various branches of the Crewe family until 1936, when the land was sold to the Duchy of Lancaster. It was used as offices after the Second World War, serving as the headquarters for the Wellcome Foundation for nearly thirty years. As of 2019, it is used as a luxury hotel, restaurant and health club.
Crewe Hall is a Jacobean mansion located near Crewe Green, east of Crewe, in Cheshire, England. Described by Nikolaus Pevsner as one of the two finest Jacobean houses in Cheshire, it is listed at grade I. Built in 1615–36 for Sir Randolph Crewe, it was one of the county's largest houses in the 17th century, and was said to have "brought London into Cheshire".
The hall was extended in the late 18th century and altered by Edward Blore in the early Victorian era. It was extensively restored by E. M. Barry after a fire in 1866, and is considered among his best works. Other artists and craftsmen employed during the restoration include J. Birnie Philip, J. G. Crace, Henry Weekes and the firm of Clayton and Bell. The interior is elaborately decorated and contains many fine examples of wood carving, chimneypieces and plasterwork, some of which are Jacobean in date.
The park was landscaped during the 18th century by Lancelot Brown, William Emes, John Webb and Humphry Repton, and formal gardens were designed by W. A. Nesfield in the 19th century. On the estate are cottages designed by Nesfield's son, William Eden Nesfield, which Pevsner considered to have introduced features such as tile hanging and pargetting into Cheshire. The stables quadrangle is contemporary with the hall and is listed at grade II star.
