- Broadchurch: Broadchurch was filmed on Dorset's stunning Jurassic coast, with the cliffs of West Bay setting the perfect back drop to ITV's new murder mystery which started on the 4th March 2013.
An all star cast including David Tennant and Olivia Colman had to solve the murder of a local 11 year old boy, which wracks the local community with suspicions, suspects and who dunit. The police investigation combined with national media has devastating effects on Broadchurch, as well as exposing Alex Harding’s (David Tennant) own secrets. The 8 part series used West Bay to flaunt our beautiful Jurassic coast beaches, coastal paths and cliffs. Perfectly situated amongst these natural wonders is the Bridport Arms Hotel. Whilst filming Broadchurch we had many members of the cast and crew stay in the Bridport Arms Hotel including the lovely Pauline Quirk with her own gorgeous labrador, Bailey. As they filmed Broadchurch over several months to capture the different seasons, it was great to see first hand the time, effort and acting unravel in our seaside towns and villages including Bridport, Burton Bradstock, Eype and West Bay!

THE JURASSIC COAST
The Jurassic Coast is a World Heritage Site on the English Channel coast of southern England. The site stretches from Orcombe Point near Exmouth in East Devon to Old Harry Rocks near Swanage in East Dorset, a distance of 155 kilometres (96 mi). Chartered in 2001, the Jurassic coast was the second wholly natural World Heritage Site to be designated in the United Kingdom. Its entire length can be walked on the South West Coast Path. The site was featured on the television programme Seven Natural Wonders as one of the wonders of the South West (of the UK), and in a 2005 poll of Radio Times readers, the Jurassic Coast was named as the fifth-greatest natural wonder in Britain.
- Geology: The Jurassic Coast consists of Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous cliffs, spanning the Mesozoic Era, documenting 180 million years of geological history.
The site shows excellent examples of landforms, including the natural arch at Durdle Door, the cove and limestone folding at Lulworth Cove and an island, the Isle of Portland. Chesil Beach is a fine example of both a tombolo (a deposition landform in which an island is attached to the mainland by a narrow piece of land such as a spit or bar) and a storm beach (a beach affected by particularly fierce waves). The site has stretches of both concordant and discordant coastlines. Due to the quality of the varied geology, the site is the subject of international field studies. This area was home to Mary Anning, a palaeontologist who studied the fossils of the coastline around Lyme Regis and discovered the first complete Ichthyosaur fossil at the Spittles.
The highest point on the Jurassic Coast, and on the entire south coast of Britain, is Golden Cap at 191 metres (627 ft).
- History: During World War II several sections of the Jurassic Coast became property of the Ministry of War. One of the Royal Navy's largest bases was at Portland Harbour, though it has since closed. A major army base at Bovington remains in use today, and large areas of land, including the coast between Lulworth Cove and Kimmeridge, including Tyneham ghost village, are still only partially accessible. Areas of the coast near Exmouth, The Fleet at Weymouth and the beaches at Studland have also been used for training for war, but have since been returned to civilian use.
Sea stacks, such as Old Harry's Rocks at Handfast Point, are an occasional feature of the coast.
Parts of the coast, especially around Portland, can be dangerous, and shipwrecks have been a feature of the coast. In January 2007 the coast experienced its most environmentally damaging wreck when the MSC Napoli, a 2,400 capacity container ship, was beached at Branscombe near Sidmouth, losing oil and cargo.
Landslips and rockfalls are a continuing feature of the evolution of this coast. On May 6 2008, a 400-metre (1,312 ft) section of the coast was dramatically re-shaped after a landslip that was described as the worst in 100 years.
- Management and access: The Jurassic Coast is largely an eroding landscape and management of the site aims to allow the natural processes involved while protecting people and property.
BRIDPORT (WEST BAY) HARBORU
Bridport (West Bay) Harbour is 15 miles west of Dorchester at the western end of Chesil Beach. It was important in the 19th Century for shipbuilding and for exporting rope and nets. It is now mainly used by locals but following major improvements to the harbour entrance, fishing vessels and leisure craft are visiting once again.
The harbour has 115 drying moorings with the majority let for private use. There are 15 commercial moorings for either fishing vessels or passenger vessels carrying fewer than 12 people. At the moment the waiting list for a mooring stands at 80.
Visiting fishing boats and commercial vessels can berth by the East Pier.
Visiting leisure craft can berth against the pontoon that has been provided, which runs up through the middle of the harbour. A second pontoon was installed in April 2009.
There is a chart of the harbour on Admiralty chart SC3315. All visitors wishing to visit West Bay should contact the harbour staff when planning their passage to confirm depth available. Please call 01308 423222, mobile 07870240636, VHF channel 16, working channel 11.
There is still a swell in southerly or south easterly winds particularly on the west side of the harbour. The inner harbour with the exception of the deep-water berth dries out but swell is much reduced in all conditions here. Please contact harbour staff for further details.
The harbour is generally manned from 8am to 6pm seven days a week in the summer season. The harbour staff can be contacted on channel 16 during this time, the working channel is 11.
The major coastal defence and harbour improvement scheme was completed in March 2005 providing a new outer harbour.
The improvements include:
- A 10 metre wide slipway where you can launch at any state of the tide into 0.75 metre of water. Please note that launching with south easterly winds can be difficult so when these occur please check with harbour staff as the slipway could be closed.
- A pontoon for passenger landing and for loading and unloading boats launched on the slipway has been provided.
- Shelter in the outer harbour for vessels with 0.75 metre draft at all states of the tide.
- Power and water for visiting vessels is available and extra facilities such as showers are planned.
Due to the increase in demand of the new slipway and operations of West Bay a further 50-metre pontoon was installed in April 2007. Due to the popularity of this and the demand for launched vessels wishing to stay in overnight, a second 40-metre pontoon was installed in April 2009, allowing vessels the opportunity to leave their boat in overnight. Please see harbour dues and charges (pdf, 17kb) (opens in a new window)Open this document with ReadSpeaker docReader for cost.
Other planned work which took place in April 2009 was a wash off area for divers, which includes a bath to wash off kit before taking it home and an outside shower for cleaning suits.
